City of Wildwood Offices to be Closed on Thursday due to Hurricane Helene

September 25, 2024

Wildwood city officials announced today that City Hall and other city offices will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, due to Hurricane Helene. Offices are tentatively scheduled to reopen the following day, weather permitting.

“Police, public works, and utility personnel will be on hand to address immediate needs with public safety and critical infrastructure,” said Jason McHugh, Wildwood’s city manager. “But our other staff are being asked to stay home and off the roads until the storm has passed, leaving those streets open for emergency responders.”

Wildwood’s city commission convened a special meeting this morning and issued a local declaration of emergency, following one issued by the Sumter County Board of County Commissioners late yesterday and an executive order issued by Gov. Ron DeSantis declaring a state of emergency in 61 Florida counties, including Sumter.

Solid waste collection services through WM will be delayed by one day for the remainder of this week. Customers who normally receive once-per-week service on Fridays will receive service on Saturday this week.

Sumter County serves as the lead for local emergency management programs and services, per executed interlocal agreements. It operates the Sumter County Emergency Operations Center, sandbag facilities, and emergency shelters.
