City of Wildwood Offices to be Closed Wednesday and Thursday

Wildwood City Hall and other city offices will be closed on Wednesday, Oct. 9, and Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024, due to Hurricane Milton.

“Essential personnel will be working around the clock to address critical public safety and infrastructure needs,” said Jason McHugh, Wildwood’s city manager. “We are taking this storm very seriously and taking precautions to protect our residents, our employees, and the essential services upon which they rely.”

Wildwood’s city commission convened a special meeting this morning and issued a local declaration of emergency, following one issued by the Sumter County Board of County Commissioners late yesterday and an executive order issued by Gov. Ron DeSantis declaring a state of emergency in 51 Florida counties, including Sumter.

Solid waste collection services through WM will be delayed by one or more days for the remainder of this week. Residents of The Villages® section of Wildwood should call the District Customer Service Center at 352-753-4508 or visit www.Districtgov.org for collection schedule updates.

“Residents should take action now to protect themselves and their loved ones. Do not wait until it is too late. Please take responsibility for your own safety and check on your neighbors,” McHugh added.

Sumter County emergency management officials strongly recommend that residents in mobile homes, RVs, or any structures that may not withstand high winds, as well as those in low-lying areas or with special needs, consider evacuation or relocating to a shelter.

Sumter County serves as the lead for local emergency management programs and services, per executed interlocal agreements. It operates the Sumter County Emergency Operations Center, sandbag facilities, and emergency shelters.
